NEWS FROM 2008

Got some interesting fixtures for Dave this year. He's qualified for the BBA Supreme Championship at Mildenhall in April for 4th place at Hednesford 2Ltr World and has been invited to join the UK team for the UK v the Continent, the first leg in Belgium on April 13 with the home leg at Ipswich on 5 July, so if you fancy a bit of continental bangering come to Belgium with us!

Another notable meeting will be the Barry Collins Memorial, 27 April, at the brand new track being built at Fleet. Our very own Gonzo is up there at the moment working to get the track done along with Eddie.

Recent Meets

Well done to everyone for all their hard work over the winter,  we haven't had much of a break.
The Winter Open was great fun despite the cold with Dave taking a fresh mondeo estate and giving it a thoroughly hard time!  He managed to snap it in the DD before having a piston break for freedom out the side of the engine.

Andre made the trip up to the London Open and did brilliantly in the racing to qualify for the final but the main topic of conversation has been the journey up and back!  His Mk2 Granada Limo's geabox gave up the ghost on the A303 but they still managed to make it to Wimbledon (thanks to Dawn being in the AA!)  Getting home was another challenge as the AA wouldn't bring it home.  They sold the granny in the pits and Woody brought the banger back but everyone else was stranded.  At 10.30 at night they were wandering round Wimbledon (as you do) where they spotted a Bluebird for sale.  Lurch did his bit and lo and behold they bought it, jumped in and drove back to Cornwall.  I'm so proud . . .

Last meeting was the 2Ltr at St Day with Dave, Andre, Lurch and Kaylee out in the bangers along with Shrek who raced for the first time at St Day. Bam did his first meeting in the ministock too.  Was a pretty quiet affair all round til the last race when the team had a mass effort to finish off Spoons dead car!  Highlight of the day, especially for Shrek who'd never been hit that hard, but just opened the post and they've all got an official warning.  Even Dave who wasn't even in his car at the time got a "formal warning for irresponsible driving"   What a joke!  Can see the fixtures list changing all over again . . . lol

Cornwall County Council are planning on selling the track and surrounding land as it is "surplus to requirements".
The sale will be by closed bidding later in the year - effectively keeping whatever is planned for the site under wraps.  Vaguely from memory I recall that the original owner of the land left restrictive covenants on the land that it could only be used for motorsports.  The council "aquired" the land from him and is now able to sell it without giving interested parties first refusal.
To quote the council representative Hannah Rees
". . . . we have a duty to sell it for the market value.
We can't give reference to anyone unless there is a specific charitable or community need.

We have to sell it unconditionally, so what it ends up being is down to the purchaser."

The land surrounding the track is used by bikes, quads and 4x4s for events as well as the obvious race meetings on the track so how this is not a community resource I don't know.
If you can help in any way contact The Renegades or Autospeed.
Even if it's just an email to say you don't agree with the sale, all help would be appreciated.  The history of the track and surrounding land would also be interesting.
More updates to come . . . .

The sale of the land at United Downs has been postponed . . . for now.  When the new Unitary Council for Cornwall comes in to effect the track and surrounding land could still be sold off.
Roger Hore has started a petition online, to save motor sports at the site, please sign it to show your support for Cornish Motorsport.
Autospeed have a meeting with the Council on Tuesday to discuss the future of the site.

Well done Spoons . . . .World Champ!!

World Champ

Cornwall has it's own motorsport World Champion . . .

On Sunday 12 October at Hednesford Hills Raceway in the west midlands, Dave Spooner of Four Lanes, won the National Banger 2 Litre World Championship.  The grid consisted of the top qualifiers from tracks all over the UK in various cars including cavaliers, mondeos, primeras and bluebirds.  Dave drew pole position on the huge grid and managed to weave through the back markers and dead cars whilst being chased down by the rest of the pack, in a thrilling world final.  Second place went to 208 Jimmy Randall from Essex, third 361 Chris Walden from Skegness.

It's a fantastic result for the Cornish driver who's been the mainstay at United Downs Raceway over the years, being track champion for a number of years and also last year winning the overall points championship at Autospeed for both United Downs and Smeatharpe in Devon.

News of his win travelled fast with racing at Smeatharpe and Cornish track, Westworld being interrupted to announce his win.  It has been well received throughout the banger racing community as Spoons is well known for the incredible hard work he puts in to his racing, made especially difficult by being based in Cornwall and the amount of travelling he has to do.

Dave, who owns Cornwall Autogas at Longdowns, is delighted with the win and is now entitled to wear the much coveted gold roof of a world champion.  Along with ttwo teams of Renegades, he will be racing at Teamarama at Smeatharpe on 26 October, so he's already building another car!

The next meeting at United Downs will be this Sunday including Bangerstocks, BRISCA F2 stock cars and ministocks.

From the restart . . .  Lurch is in the mondeo estate and Dave in the saloon.  Unfortuntately my videoing skills went out the window at the end when Dave slid out towards the parked cars on the very last bend!!!
